Meebo IM App Now Available Free On iPhone!

There are some very good paid instant messaging apps for the App Store, and plenty of free options too. Meebo is the first that manages to be both, with almost no compromise.

Meebo was one of the first companies out of the gates with an instant message web app for the iPhone, so it’s weird that it took them this long to go native. But hey, whatever, they did, and it’s goddamn fantastic. Here’s the cream of the feature list:

• Multiprotocol support, including obvious choices like AIM, Google Talk, Facebook and MySpace, as well as an impressive list of smaller networks
• Push notifications, which automatically activate when you close the app without signing out.
• conversation logging, not just on your phone, but on Meebo’s servers, as associated with your Meebo account.
• “Now typing” notifications, away messages, message copying, landscape mode, swiping between chats—the kind of stuff that makes the experience rich, versus merely acceptable

Meebo’s aesthetic is subdued and unobtrusive, and gesture and navigation behaviors make sense throughout the app. Patchy EDGE connectivity didn’t seem to degrade my experience at all, push notifications worked like a charm, with roughly two seconds of delay versus a regular client.

In short, Meebo does everything I need from a chat client, does it well, and does it for free. My only hangups? There’s no Skype messaging support, and—though I haven’t—some iPhone 3G users are experiencing crashes during regular use. But! (And I can’t say this enough!) It’s free. Just give it a try. Even if you’ve already paid for a Trillian or a BeeJive, you might find something you like here. [Meebo]

Facebook’s Version of the Retweet

We’ve long speculated as to when Facebook might get its own version of Twitter’s retweet, and it appears that the time is now. This evening, the site rolled out a “via” feature that lets you repost another user’s shared items, with a “via” link attached for attribution.

It appears the feature is live for everyone. To try it, just go to a friend’s posted item in your news feed, click “share,” and you’ll see a “via [your friend’s name]” (with an option to remove it). Once shared, the item will appear on your profile, with a via link that points to your friend’s profile. Your friends will also see the item in their News Feeds, creating the viral loop that is the Twitter retweet.

Currently, the feature only works for posted links – you can’t “via” someone else’s status update or photo. Nonetheless, given the most visible use of retweets on Twitter is links, with aggregators like Tweetmeme tracking which stories get retweeted the most, it’s a big move for Facebook that makes its service even more Twitter-like.

Where the feature goes from here, we’re not sure, but given the social network’s ambition to make more and more of what you post public, it’s clearly another attempt to become more relevant in the world of real-time news, search, and information. Whether or not users respond and start posting “shared via links” (is that what we call them?) will also remain to be seen.

Samsung Pixon12 M8910 12-megapixel all-touch phone announced

Wow, now this is quite the camera phone coming:

The Samsung Pixon12 M8910 is the first 12-megapixel all-touch phone to be released, boasting touch autofocus tracking, 28mm wide-angle lens and Xenon flash.

Samsung today announced its first 12-megapixel all-touch phone, the Samsung Pixon12 M8910. The phone can easily be compared to the upcoming Sony Ericsson Satio when it comes to specifications, though the latter will be a smartphone powered by Symbian S60 5th Edition.

The Samsung Pixon12 M8910 sports a dedicated camera button, and users are promised fast image saving for next shot so users can move to the next shot within around 2 seconds. The phone will also offer touch autofocus tracking, where users can select focus point with the touch of a finger, after which the AF function will automatically follow the object.

Moreover, a Smart Auto feature will automatically change the scene and mode based on its object, background and lighting. That’s a popular feature on entry-level compact cameras too, though it doesn’t always provide the best image quality. The image processor of the phone will ultimately decide the camera performance at the end of the day here. Rounding out the camera specs, the Samsung Pixon12 M8910 will offer a 28mm wide-angle lens and Xenon flash.

Just like the recently released Samsung S8300, the Samsung Pixon12 M8910 will boast a large AMOLED display (3.1-inch screen with a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 while providing power-saving features). There’s however no word on the screen resolution, so we assume it’s of the usual Wide QVGA kind (240×400 pixels).

The Samsung Pixon12 M8910 also promises easy on-board photo management with multiple ways of sorting – by tags, file names, ratings and time. In addition, a multi-selection feature enables users to pull up images in groups rather than one by one. For image and video sharing, the Samsung Pixon12 M8910 will offer the Samsung Share Pix application. It’ll let users upload social networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, MySpace, Photobucket and Friendster.

In the connectivity department, the Samsung Pixon12 M8910 boasts Wi-Fi, HSDPA/HSUPA and Bluetooth. It’ll operate on Quadband GSM networks, when released in European countries in late June 2009. Samsung promises that the phone will appear in other markets in August, but there’s no specific mention of the North American market.

T-Mobile just recently released the Samsung Memoir 8-megapixel cameraphone, which along with the Motorola Zine ZN5, are the cameraphone kings when it comes to U.S. carrier phones. There are rumors suggesting that AT&T will offer the Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot C905 8-megapixel phone soon, so perhaps the carriers will consider the new 12-megapixel cameraphones that are coming out too. We’ll just have to wait and see.

iStore uses Latin fever to boost sales

The island’s biggest Latin dance group has joined forces with iStore to promote the Mambo and Mac to locals and tourists.

iStore will supply two Mac kiosks for public use at the opening night of BermudaSalsa.com’s Latin Entertainment Sizzling Summer Series.

People attending the event – at Bonefish in Dockyard on June 1 – can take pictures of themselves using the built-in cameras then upload them from the iStore weblink to BermudaSalsa.com or to social networking sites such as Facebook.

The Summer Series is organized by Bermuda Salsa.com‘s production company, SalsaMania.

Exciting

All of their DJs use Macs and MacBook Pro to deliver music on the Latin Flavors Radio Show every Saturday from 7pm until 9pm on Magic 102.7.

Macs are also used at all SalsaMania’s Latin entertainment events, such as Bonefish Mondays and Thursdays, Grotto Bay Beach Mondays, Elbow Beach Veranda Bar Fridays and Rumbar Saturdays.
