If you’ve preordered a JooJoo and wonder where it’s been, Fusion Garage has just revealed that shipments will be delayed until March 25th.

Evidently, their previous announcement promising February shipments was a bit premature, though I’m not sure anyone is shocked by the delay, given the controversy of the whole situation.

Earlier this month, Fusion Garage’s JooJoo Internet tablet went into full production with an anticipated on-time delivery to consumers at the end of February. Last week, the company became aware of a manufacturing issue involving JooJoo’s industry-first 12.1 inch capacitive touch screen which Fusion Garage was quickly able to diagnose and rectify. The company now forecasts the JooJoo will be sent to consumers on March 25.

The manufacturing issue centers on fine tuning the touch sensitivity of the capacitive screen. Fusion Garage will be providing all pre-order customers with a free JooJoo accessory to compensate for the delay in the delivery of their JooJoo.

No surprises here, with both the WinMo-running M10 and Android-powered A50 both leaked in January by Asustek’s president. The partnership between Garmin and Asustek has resulted in a few lacklustre phones, but the A50 actually sounds more than decent.

They’re boasting it brings “more location technology than any other smartphone,” as you’d expect from the satnav dudes at Garmin. The hardware isn’t all that surprising, with a 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, a 3.0-megapixel camera with autofocus and geotagging, Bluetooth, 4GB of internal storage (with the usual microSD card slot) and an accelerometer. No word on Wi-Fi just yet.

Bundled with the phone is a car mount and power cable for the car, which is a nice touch—nothing worse than having to fork out for additional accessories after laying down a few hundred on the actual device. The software is, of course, Garmin’s turn-by-turn navigation.

It’ll go on sale sometime in the first six months of 2010—nice and vague—and the price hasn’t been announced (or rumored, in the M10′s case) just yet.

That aforementioned M10 (above) won’t be showing up with Windows Mobile 7, launching instead with 6.5.3 (though presumably it’ll be available for a software update once WinMo 7 launches at the end of the year). Specs sound just like they did when Asustek president Benson Lin blabbed last month about it, with the 3.5-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen, 4GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM and the same again for ROM. Garmin and Asustek have chosen a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM 7227 chip which won’t steal too many headlines, but at least it’s running the most recent version of WinMo, eh? The rumored price was $435 last month, but we’ll keep you updated once we receive official word. Here’s how they measure up, spec-wise:

Updated: We’ve added Lenovo IdeaPad U1 and Archos 9 Windows 7 edition—see below for more details.

As you can see, they have different strengths and weaknesses, some of which will become more clear in the coming months as we learn more about each tablet. (ThatDell Mini 5 is especially inscrutable right now.)

The iPad has the most storage, cheap 3G, the time-tested iPhone OS and its mountain of apps, and a serious amount of Apple marketing juice behind it. But it’s also famously lacking features common to the other tablets, such as webcam and multitasking (only first party apps like music and email can multitask). The Notion Ink Adam is perhaps the most interesting of the bunch, with its dual-function transflective screen from Pixel Qi: It can be either a normal LCD or, with the flick of a switch, an easy-on-the-eyes reflective LCD that resembles e-ink. Its hardware is also surprisingly impressive—but it remains to be seen if Android is really the right OS for a 10-inch tablet.

The Dell Mini 5 and forthcoming Android edition of the Archos 7 tablet are two of a kind, almost oversized smartphones in their feature sets. Is an extra two or three inches of screen real estate worth the consequent decrease in pocketability? Perhaps not. And finally, there’s the maligned JooJoo, formerly the CrunchPad, a bit of an oddball as the only web-only device in the bunch. It doesn’t really have apps, can’t multitask, and pretty much confines you to an albeit fancy browser, sort of like Chrome OS will. The JooJoo is also the only tablet here to have no demonstrated way to read ebooks.

Update: The two new additions in v.2 of this chart, the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 and Archos 9, are both unusual. The Windows 7-powered Archos 9 has been available since September, is the only slate here that lacks multitouch, and is the only one with a HDD instead of solid state memory of some kind. It’s more related to the older tablets, but there’s no keyboard, just a 9-inch touchscreen. It doesn’t even have specific apps like the HP Slate‘s TouchSmart, it’s just a Windows computer.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 is even weirder, in that it’s actually two computers—the specs listed in the chart are for the tablet detached, but when it’s attached to its base, it switches both hardware and software. In its attached form, it’s a Windows 7 laptop with a full keyboard and trackpad, Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of memory, eSATA, VGA- and HDMI-out, and all the other amenities you’d expect from a modern thin-and-light. We just have see what it’s like when it ships in June.

A quick word about “slates” vs. “tablets”: These are tablets, and it’s a word we prefer. The sad fact is, it’s overused. There’s no way to say “tablet” without including every godawful stylus-based convertible laptop built since 2002. (Thank you, Bill Gates!) And even the new touchscreen tablets come in single-pane and keyboard-equipped laptop styles. So “slate,” good or bad, is the more apt term.

After Apple unveiled the iPad on Wednesday in San Francisco, I squeezed into a crowded room of journalists to demo the lightweight computer that looks rather like a stretched-out iPhone.

My No. 1 goal: Try the keyboard.

The full-size, touch-screen keyboard on the iPad could make or break the device.

The iPad doesn’t come with a hardware keyboard, like the one you probably have on your laptop or home PC. Neither does the iPhone, and it’s worth noting that many people type on that device with relative ease. But, if, as Apple CEO Steve Jobs says, the iPad can be a device for reading and creating documents, spreadsheets and office presentations – if it aims to replace the laptop and netbook – then it has to be easy to type on.

Image via CrunchBase

The problem: It’s not, at least not at first.

In a demo at Apple’s invite-only event, Apple CEO Steve Jobs tapped away on the iPad keyboard using all of his fingers. He said typing on the device is “a dream.” I found typing on the iPad to be rather cumbersome. Hardware keyboards are tactile. Your fingers can feel where they’re supposed to be.

But if you’re not looking at the iPad screen, then there’s no way to know what you’re typing until you see the errors popping up in your documents. I found myself choosing finger-strokes with anxious care, which slowed me down considerably – more than the iPhone keyboard does.

I chatted with some other tech reporters to see what they thought. Jacqui Cheng, associate editor at Ars Technica, said she had some similar issues and overall described typing on the iPad as “very frustrating.” She’s an adept iPhone typist, but said the iPad screen is too large to let users type with their thumbs, as many do on the much-smaller iPhone.

Other people said they found the keyboard on the iPad to be unexpectedly comfortable. It is large enough for average-sized hands when the 9.7-inch device is turned horizontally, which is rather unique. “I think it’s amazing,” Stephen Hutcheon, of the Sydney Morning Herald, said of the device in general. “It just sits really nicely in your hand. It’s just a very intuitive feel.”

The typing issues may work themselves out over time as people become more comfortable typing in this new way. And, according to one product rep, Apple will offer a $69 hardware keyboard that plugs into the iPad. (When Jobs announced the hardware keyboard at the press event, the man sitting next to me, a business-dressed market analyst, literally screamed with joy).

Still, the iPad is definitely a product you’ll want to touch before buying.
