Michael Dell pulls Mini 5 Android from his pocket

Hot on the heels of us thinking maybe the Dell Streak / Mini 5 was possibly due for a name change to the “M01M,” a roving heckler from TechCrunch managed to catch the man himself, Michael Dell, on the street and get a quick demonstration of the thing — which he with no uncertain terms referred to as the “Mini 5.” He swiped through a number of home screens and quickly showed the five megapixel camera on the back, mentioned 3G wireless, and then tucked it away again. No price was given, but the biggest news is confirmation that it’s coming out in “a couple of months,” which is something of a surprise given the company was still calling it a concept just a few weeks ago. 3G network and Apple iPhone 3G launched by M3 Wireless

The latest phase of the technology revolution has finally arrived in Bermuda with the launch of the new 3G network and Apple iPhone 3G by M3 Wireless.

The new devices were officially unveiled by Michael Beckles, chief operations officer of M3 Wireless, at a launch event yesterday, and will be available at the wireless service provider’s retail store on Burnaby Street and P-tech in Reid Street.

The new service will provide broadband-like data speeds over the mobile network both on Island and overseas where it is available – a milestone in the Island’s technological advancement, according to Mr. Beckles.

“We are very excited about this deployment of our high-speed broadband 3G network,” he said.

“We are the first network to be deploying 3G in Bermuda. and the first carrier to be deploying the Apple iPhone 3G.

“To be able to deploy the best technological services to Bermuda is something that we are extremely proud of and we will continue to be at the forefront of new technology.

“We want Bermudians to be able to experience the same level of service that people around the world experience.”

3G, which means third generation wireless technology, allows users to experience better data performance when browsing and downloading from the Internet, emailing or viewing videos, with the ability to make phone calls at the same time, all on a reliable network.

The Apple iPhone complements the 3G network by providing the ability to video-stream, use the Internet browser and download music and applications. It comes in 8GB and 16GB models with a widescreen iPod format and full HTML Internet browser, as well as GPS, WiFi and it supports Microsoft Exchange.

But users of the new network can also use a range of 3G smartphones, such as the BlackBerry Bold, Nokia E71 and HTC Touch Diamond to access all of the applications they need.

Meanwhile, M3 Wireless’ existing 2G customers will continue to have their network maintained and upgraded, said Mr. Beckles.

“We wanted to make the switch from 2G to 3G simple for our customers who have already purchased a 3G device from us,” he said.

“All they have to do is pick up a 3G SIM card from M3′s retail store on Burnaby Street.”

To facilitate the switch, M3 has set up a dedicated desk to handle SIM card swaps from today through to April 9, after which they will be available at its service counters.

Mr. Beckles was joined at the meeting by Ken Wilson, vice-president of network operations at M3 Wireless, who was behind bringing the 3G network to Bermuda, John Manderson, president and owner of Wireless Ventures, one of the company’s main consultants for the project, and Michael Wells, acting director of telecommunications in the Ministry of Energy, Telecommunications and E-Commerce, who helped in setting up the provision of the service, which was four months in the testing prior to its launch.

The news is:

- M3 Wireless introduced Unlimited Local Voice, Text Messages and Data*, with some international text messages thrown in, for $153. Before, their offering was $238 for a comparable package.

- Digicel have been heavily promoting unlimited cellular service for $165, but it only included Local Voice and Text Messages; Unlimited Data had to be added on for $45 to make it truly unlimited, which brought the total price up to $210 per month.

As of yesterday, it appears M3 Wireless has gone the farthest in giving cellular customer the best unlimited value package by:

- Shaving $12 off Digicel’s best price

- Adding unlimited data to their package

- Including 50 international text messages

In Bermuda, 500 MB is the data cap with M3, which is about 500 pictures or 100 streamed or downloaded songs for the month; Cellular One is 5 Gigs; Digicel has not stated a cap. Also, M3 and Cellular One are operating 3G Networks, which means downloads to your device will be much faster – up to 2 Mbps.

So that you clearly understand what $0.006/kb fee means.

First there are 1,024 kb in 1 Mb (Megabyte); 1 MB is the size of one photograph taken on a regular cellphone / a BlackBerry photo is 3 MBs in size

So, if 1 MB = 1,024 kb, you can simply multiply the $0.006 by the 1,024 kb to get a price per MB of data.

For example:

A) $0.006 x 1,024 = $6.14 per MB or 1 regular photo would cost you $6.14 to send or download, if you agree to go over the 500 MB cap

B) $0.006 x 3,072 = $18.43 per BlackBerry photo sent or downloaded, if you agree to go over the 500 MB cap
