Wayne Caines has resigned his Government posts to pursue a career in the private sector.

Mr. Caines, a Senator and Junior Minister of Tourism, Transport, the Environment and Sports, recently stepped down as the Premier’s Chief of Staff but yesterday resigned from Government.

Premier Ewart Brown said: “Senator Caines has been a clear asset to the Government’s Senate team and has been a powerful advocate for road safety, leading in the area of addressing some of the recent issues on our roads.

“I can only say that I wish Wayne well as he brings to bear his considerable talents in the private sector. His energy and desire to get the job done will make him valuable to his new employer.”

Dr. Brown said the Senator “had indicated a desire to explore other opportunities in the private sector”. He added that he hoped to fill the Government vacancy in the Senate by next week.

“Wayne’s seat in the Senate will not be allowed to get cold and I hope to fill the vacancy created by today’s announcement during the course of this week,” said the Premier.

Mr. Caines has been appointed CEO of Digicel’s operations on the Island. The largest mobile telecommunications company in the Caribbean, Digicel has six million customers in 23 markets and is now expanding into Central America. The company launched its Bermuda operations in 2006.

The former Senator replaces David Hunter, who was recently appointed Digicel CEO of Jamaica. CEO for Digicel North Caribbean, David Hall, said: “Wayne’s exceptional energy, focus and commitment to his community make him a perfect match for Digicel. I am sure that with Wayne at the helm, Digicel will continue to grow in the Bermuda market.”

Mr. Caines graduated in History and Political Science from Oakwood College and is also a graduate of the University of Kent School of Law and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

He was appointed to the Senate in October 2006 after working as a prosecutor for Director of Public Prosecutions since 2000. Mr. Caines was also a Captain with the Bermuda Regiment.

At the time of his appointment, he said: “My service began as a young man in the army – this is a natural evolution. I know the Premier had a big vision for Bermuda as a whole. I play a part in that vision. I now have a responsibility for the people of Bermuda and I am up for that challenge.”

Yesterday, Mr. Caines said: “I would like to thank the Premier for his trust in giving me this opportunity to lead in my country – many talented Bermudians are not given the opportunity to lead, and I look forward to continuing to serve my community.”

Asked what accomplishments he was most proud of in Government, Mr. Caines said: “I am most proud to have been a servant to the people. I am just glad to have had the time to serve the people of Bermuda.”

We at WSI obviously wish Wayne all the success in the world in this extremely challenging new role.
